China has criticized the United States for sending a "dangerous message" to Taiwan's leader
Taipei: China called it a "dangerous decision" as the United States decided to congratulate Taiwanese President Susan Angan at the opening ceremony on Wednesday.
The self-sufficient island has become the latest flashpoint between the world's two largest economies.
Taiwanese voters re-elected Tassmai in January with a landslide victory, an urgent need for China's ongoing campaign to secede from the island.
At a ceremony on Wednesday, he was sworn in for another four years, urging China to live peacefully with self-proclaimed Taiwan and reduce tensions.
But US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo welcomed Tai's "courage and wisdom" and urged Beijing not to formally recognize Taipei.
Beijing's foreign ministry said the message was "provocative" and that Washington had broken its diplomatic promises.
Susan, 63, hates Beijing because his party sees Taiwan as a truly independent state and not part of "One China."
Since he first came to power in 2016, China has rejected the talks and increased economic, diplomatic, military, and diplomatic pressure on the island.
'A way to coexist'
Beijing considers Taiwan part of its territory and has decided to occupy it where necessary.
Washington has repeatedly recognized Beijing as a key ally of Taiwan, but it has been a key ally of Taiwan and has forced Congress to sell arms to ensure its defense.
Relations between Taipei and Washington have accelerated since Sino-US relations intensified under President Donald Trump.
Beijing has come up with a "one country, two systems" model that would allow Taiwan, like Hong Kong, to gain some independence by recognizing China's sovereignty.
But Tai made it clear in his inaugural address that the idea was non-starter.
Tai renewed its offer with Beijing.
He added that both sides have a duty to forge a long-term partnership and prevent animosities and differences.
Taiwanese identity
Taiwan has been independent since 1949 after defeating the Communists and fleeing to the island to form a rival government.
For decades, Taiwan's leaders and many voters have seen themselves as competing representatives of China on all fronts, as several countries have changed diplomatic affiliations in Beijing. Since the 1990s, the island has been transformed into a democracy under universal sovereignty, which has made Taiwan a distinct identity and many people do not want any alliance with China.
In Beijing, it is a matter of concern that the official declaration of independence through Taipei will definitely cross the red line.
Following Tai's speech, China's Taiwan Affairs Office warned that it would never tolerate secession from the island.
Analysts say Tai's speech was a compromise.
Michael Cole said the Thai president had drawn a clear line and exchanged some plausible arguments. If he wants to do that, Beijing's leadership could be cut in half. Who lives in Taipei, the Taiwan Studies program at the University of Nottingham told AFP
Fan Shaping, a political analyst at the National Taiwan Normal University, said he had also assured the United States that he would not be in a hurry and would not cause trouble.
The 23rd opening ceremony was also to celebrate the successful fight against the coronavirus in Taiwan.
Despite its close ties with China and its economic ties, Taiwan has managed to expand to just seven deaths and has sent security assistance packages around the world.
